Barbara Pozzo is an Italian legal scholar, UNESCO Chair holder, and member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. She serves as professor of Comparative Private Law at the University of Insubria's Department of Law, Economics and Culture.[1] In 2019, she was awarded the UNESCO Chair on "Gender Equality and Women's Rights in the Multicultural Society," and in 2024, she was elected as a corresponding member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in the Legal Sciences category.[2] She currently serves as the President of the Italian Society for Research in Comparative Law (SIRD).
Education
[edit]Born in Calcutta, India, Pozzo completed her primary and secondary education at the Swiss School system, attending institutions in Milan and Rome before obtaining the Swiss Federal Maturity in 1983. She received her law degree in 1989 and completed three cycles of study at the University of Strasbourg's Faculté Internationale de Droit Comparé under the Promotion Ernst von Caemmerer.[3]
Her postdoctoral research was conducted at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg (1989-1993), Florida International University (1989), and Berkeley Law School (1992, 1998).[3]

Administrative positions
[edit]At the University of Insubria, Pozzo has held several administrative positions, including Director of the Department of Law, Economics and Culture (2015-2021) and member of the Academic Senate (2015-2021). Since 2021, she has served as the Rector's Delegate for Gender Equality and Equal Opportunities.[3]
European Union collaboration

- Directorate-General for Translation (2005-2006), conducting specialized seminars on legal translation
- Directorate-General for Climate Action's Adaptation Unit, contributing to climate change adaptation strategies

UNESCO Chair
[edit]The UNESCO Chair on "Gender Equality and Women's Rights in the Multicultural Society" was established at the University of Insubria in 2019 under Pozzo's direction. The Chair participates in the UNITWIN UNESCO Chair Programme and the Global Network of UNESCO Chairs on Gender. Through this platform, she has organized international conferences and contributed to global dialogue on gender equality in multicultural contexts.[3]

In 2022, she was awarded the NODES project under the PNRR Innovation Ecosystems call, securing €9 million for research on Culture and Tourism Industry at the University of Insubria.[3]
