The Bṛhattrayīratna Award (also Brihatrayee Ratna Award) is a prestigious accolade in the field of Ayurveda, instituted in 1994 by The Arya Vaidya Pharmacy (Coimbatore) Limited. It was established in memory of Aryavaidyan P.V. Rama Varier, the founder of Arya Vaidya Pharmacy, to honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Ayurveda. The Bṛhattrayīratna Award, has evolved into one of the most esteemed accolades within the Ayurveda fraternity. Symbolising the essence of the Bṛhattrayīs in Ayurveda - Charaka, Sushruta, and Vagbhata - the award epitomises the pinnacle of intellectual achievement in Ayurveda, denoting mastery over the subject. It is awarded to those who utilise their expertise for the betterment of humanity, leaving a lasting impact on Ayurveda and society.

History

The inaugural Bṛhattrayīratna Award was presented in 1994 to Vaidya Hanumanth Rao, recognizing his exemplary efforts in promoting Ayurveda. Over the years, this award has become one of the highest honors in the Ayurveda community. The award was handed over to him by Sri T. N. Sheshan, the then Chief Election Commissioner of India in function at Coimbatore

In 2023, Dr. Sadanand P. Sardeshmukh received the Bṛhattrayīratna Award. The award was presented by the Vice President of India for his remarkable contributions to the field, particularly in uplifting Ayurveda and advancing its clinical practices. The award was presented during the Inaugural function of 5th Global Ayurveda Fest at Thiruvanathapuram, Kerala.[1]

  • 2010: Shared by Bṛhattrayīratna Vaidya Vilas Nanal and Bṛhattrayī Ratna Vaidya Ramesh Nanal award was handed over by His Excellency Shri. K. Sankaranarayanan, the then Governor of Maharashtra at Pune.[7]
