Ashley Simpson is a British orthopaedic surgeon specializing in peripheral nerve injuries, with a focus on both adult and pediatric brachial plexus injuries. He serves as a consultant at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) in Stanmore, UK.

Education and Early Career

Simpson earned his Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Neuroscience from St. John's College, University of Cambridge. He pursued his medical degree at St. Bartholomew’s and The London School of Clinical Medicine, where he also completed a Master of Science in Trauma Science. Following his medical studies, Simpson worked at the European Space Agency's Astronaut Training Centre in Cologne, Germany, contributing to astronaut training and conducting research on bone loss in microgravity environments.


Specialist Training

Simpson completed his orthopaedic training on the Percivall Pott Trauma & Orthopaedic Programme in London, focusing on peripheral nerve injuries and soft tissue reconstruction of the upper and lower limbs. He achieved his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Trauma & Orthopaedics in 2021. His specialist training included managing peripheral nerve injuries at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and addressing sports injuries of the knee and ankle under Professor Francisco Guerra Pinto in Lisbon, Portugal.


Fellowships and Consultant Roles

Simpson undertook the Perth Sports Surgery Fellowship in Western Australia, followed by the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Upper Limb Fellowship in London. He was appointed as a consultant at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital before joining the RNOH.


Research and Professional Interests

His research interests encompass the application of artificial intelligence in clinical decision-making, imaging and diagnostics in peripheral nerve injuries, and defining glenoid morphology in birth-related brachial plexus injuries. Simpson is a reviewer for the journals Injury and the Journal of Experimental Orthopaedics. He is a member of the NHS England Specialised Services Commissioning Work Group, contributing to the establishment of national pathways for brachial plexus and peripheral nerve injuries. Additionally, he serves on the Shoulder and Elbow subcommittee of the Société Internationale de Chirurgie Orthopédique et de Traumatologie (SICOT) and on the Education committee of the British Shoulder and Elbow Society (BESS).


Academic Contributions

Simpson supervises both national and international Peripheral Nerve Injury Fellowships and is a faculty member for the Executive Fellowship in Surgical Leadership at King's Health Partners.
