A. W. Pollitt, Mus Doc, FRCO, LRAM, ARCM, (1878-1933), was a teacher, organist, choir master and composer, born in rural Lancashire, but spent spent most of his life in Liverpool, England.
Early years
[edit]Arthur Wormald Pollitt was born in Crompton, (but shown as Liverpool in some sources), Lancashire, on 27 November 1878, son of John and Susan Wormald. He was a choir boy at Manchester Cathedral[1] [2] and went on to study at the Royal Manchester College of Music.[2] He was awarded the degree of Doctor in Music by the University of Durham.[1][2] He married Gwendoline May Lund, (1875-1963) and they had two children.
Career
[edit]As well as teaching privately, Dr Pollitt was a Lecturer in Music at the University of Liverpool from 1919[2] until his death on 3 February 1933.[1][2] He was Sub-organist at Manchester Cathedral[1][2] and later organist at the former Hope Street Unitarian Church, Liverpool (otherwie known as Hope Street Unitarian Chapel), and the Liverpool School for the Blind, then in Hardman Street but, on its current site, now known as the Royal School for the Blind, Liverpool.[1][2] He was appointed Chorus Master of the Liverpool Philharmonic Choir (now Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir) from 1918 until 1929.[3][1][2]
His published music is largely confined to organ and choral works.[4] He was author of a book 'The Enjoyment of Music'.[1][5]
Voluntary work
[edit]Dr Pollitt was one of the founders of the Rodewald Concert Society and served as its Treasurer until his death.[6][7] He was also Treasurer of the Incorporated Society of Musicians[1] and President of the Liverpool and District Organists' and Choir Masters' Association, 1916 -17,[1] now known simply as Liverpool Organists' Association.https://liverpoolorganists.wordpress.com/what-we-do/
