Arnoldus Vanderhorst Brumby (December 10, 1809 – November 2, 1887) was an American military officer and West Point graduate.[1] He is best known for founding the Georgia Military Institute and for his service in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War.[2]
Life and career
[edit]Brumby was born on December 10, 1809, in Sumter District, South Carolina.[3]
He was a cadet at the United States Military Academy from July 1830 to July 1835.[3] He served at Fort Johnston in 1836. He fought in the Seminole Wars between the United States and the Seminoles that same year.[3]
From 1836 to 1838, Brumby was a civil engineer in Alabama. From 1838 to 1840, Brumby was a tutor of mathematics and an instructor of civil engineering at the University of Alabama.[3]
Brumby died on November 2, 1887, in Cartersville, Georgia. He is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery.[3]
Historic house
[edit]The Arnoldus Brumby House in Marietta, Georgia, (formerly owned by Brumby) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[4] The house was designed in the Greek Revival architectural style, with Egyptian Revival features.[4]
