Anna Trindade Falcão is a Brazilian astrophysicist and science educator, currently based at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics..[1], in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is best known for her contributions to the study of supermassive black holes and active galactic nuclei (AGN), with a particular focus on the interaction between active supermassive black holes and their host galaxies[2][3].
One of her major contributions is the discovery of the closest known candidate for a dual supermassive black hole pair, identified through multi-wavelength observations[4][5]. Alongside her research, Trindade Falcão actively participates in science education, regularly engaging in public talks to promote astronomy and science[6][7].
Education and Career
[edit]Anna Trindade Falcão was born in 1995 in Belo Horizonte, a region in the southeastern part of Brazil. She earned her B.Sc. in Physics from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in 2017. She later completed both her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Physics and Astrophysics at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., graduating in 2022. After completing her Ph.D., she joined the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics as a postdoctoral researcher[8].
Her research primarily focuses on AGN and their influence on galaxy formation and evolution. In 2023, Anna Trindade Falcão became part of the science team for NASA’s Advanced X-ray Imaging Satellite (AXIS), a high-resolution X-ray telescope under development for a 2032 launch[9]. The AXIS mission aims to provide deeper insights into AGN feedback mechanisms, dual AGNs, and the high-redshift universe[10] In July 2025, Anna Trindade Falcão will join NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) as a NASA Postdoctoral Program Fellow, where she will continue her work on AGN and supermassive black holes.

Her research has explored the interplay between AGN outflows and galaxy formation, focusing on the effects of black hole activity on their surrounding environments. In 2022, she developed an innovative technique for measuring the kinematics of extended X-ray-emitting gas using optical and near-infrared emission lines[11]. Two years later, in 2024, she led a team that discovered the closest pair of active supermassive black holes in the local Universe, using data from the Hubble Space Telescope, the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Very Large Array Telescope[12]
