Angelo Albert Buzz von Möller (born 5 July 2004) is an Australian political commentator who served as the 37th Deputy Youth Premier of Victoria from 2023 to 2024[1][2].
He first joined the Victorian Youth Parliament in the Legislative Council in 2021, and became a Member of the Victorian Youth Parliament's Legislative Assembly in 2023. He was appointed onto the Youth National Cabinet in 2023 and became Housing spokesperson.
Early life
[edit]Angelo Albert Buzz von Möller was born in Mitcham, Victoria in Melbourne's east on 5 July 2004, the only child of film director Karl von Möller and career practitioner and former film producer Bronte Howell.[3][4][5]. He attended Preshil, The Margaret Lyttle Memorial School where he was a student since kindergarten[6][7]. von Möller also attened St Martins Youth Arts Centre, a acting school in South Yarra.
von Möller played cello in various orchestras with the Melbourne Youth Orchestras[8][9][10]
von Möller was considering taking a gap year before going to University[7] although ended up attending the University of Canberra studying a Bachelor of Politics and International Relations (Government and Policy) and a Bachelor of Arts (Culture and Heritage)[11].
Politics
[edit]Youth National Cabinet
[edit]von Möller was appointed onto the Youth National Cabinet on 30th November 2023, an initiative by the YMCA to have young people's ideas represented in Federal Parliament. On 28th December 2023, von Möller announced he had been appointed as Housing spokesman.
Youth Parliament
[edit]von Möller first became a member of the Victorian Youth Parliament in 2021 representing Boroondara passing Bills establishing an 'Online Mental Health Hub' as well as an 'Effective E-Waste Management System'[12][13][14]. On 30th June 2022 von Möller announced he had retired from Youth Parliament[15].
On 12th April 2023 von Möller announced he had filled a vacancy in Geelong and would be returning in the 37th Youth Parliament[16].[17][18]
Deputy Youth Premier of Victoria
[edit]von Möller was elected as the Deputy Youth Premier of Victoria in the Victorian Youth Parliament on 27th May 2023[19][20][21].
In the 37th Youth Parliament von Möller was involved in drafting a bill on disability inclusion in Victorian secondary education curriculum[20]
von Möller was succeeded as Deputy Youth Premier by Danica Meas, Youth Member for Boroondara on 25th May 2024[22].
Warrandyte By-election 2023
[edit]There were reports that von Möller was considering standing in the 2023 Warrandyte state by-election as an Independent.[17][23][18][24]. It caused speculation online [25]. Von Möller denied the claims and in a public statement said it was "a clear miscommunication error"[26]. Two days after von Möller's statement that he wouldn't contest the seat, Sky News host Peta Credlin reported that von Möller would be contesting the by-election describing him as "Teal Godfather's Nephew" referring to von Möller being Simon Holmes à Court's nephew in an interview with executive director of the Institute of Public Affairs John Roskam. During the interview Roskam announced his intention to run for Liberal Party preselection for the seat[23][27]. Credlin retracted her comments in the following broadcast[28].
QandA Question
[edit]von Möller appeared on ABC Show QandA hosted by Patricia Karvelas in Sydney to ask a question to the panel consisting of ACTU Secretary - Sally McManus, Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services Stephen Jones, Liberal Member for Menzies Keith Wolahan, Sky News US Contributor Michael Ware and Human Rights Advocate Thenu Herath[29]. von Möller asked "We're all well aware of what the RBA (Reserve Bank of Australia) can do to manage inflation. What further levers can government pull to reduce the effects of inflation?"[30][31]
Views
[edit]von Möller is described as being a moderate beliving in greater action on climate change and restoring integrity to politics.[32]
In May 2023 von Möller clashed with former senator, Cory Bernardi about Russia's invasion of Ukraine[33] with Bernardi calling von Möller a "typical righteuos leftist."[34]. von Möller has previously expressed his support for Ukraine and Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy having met with Ukraine's Ambassador to Australia Vasyl Myroshnychenko[35]. von Möller described Russian President, Vladamir Putin "a pathological liar and a bully playing chess with peoples lives."[36]
von Möller has stated that he support's freeing Julian Assange after meeting with Assange's wife and lawyer Stella Assange in Canberra in 2023[37]. von Möller was in attendance at Canberra Airport for Julian Assange's release[38]
Personal Life
[edit]von Möller is the son of film director and cinematographer Karl von Möller and Bronte Howell appearing and helping with some of their films and projects[39]. He is also the nephew of Climate 200 founder, Simon Holmes à Court[17][40] von Möller is the step-great-grandson of Hungarian Linguist, Lajos Kazár.
von Möller participated in the Sketchbook Project[41] based at the Brooklyn Art Library. In 2023, von Möller's sketchbook was moved to the Taube Museum of Art in Minot, North Dakota, United States[42].
von Möller was on the National Gallery of Victoria Teen Council in 2018[43].
von Möller was appointed onto the Heide Museum of Modern Art's Youth Advisory Committee[44] from 2019 to 2023.
In May 2023 von Möller announced on Twitter that he had been appointed onto the United States Embassy's Youth Advisory Council[45] [46] under United States Ambassador to Australia Caroline Kennedy the daughter of former United States President, John F. Kennedy[47]
In November 2023 von Möller was appointed onto the National Gallery of Australia's Youth Council[48].
In February 2024, two days following an incident where former Deputy Prime Minister, Barnaby Joyce was captured sprawled out on a public footpath in Canberra after falling off a planter box, mumbling expletives into his phone in an apparently intoxicated state, von Möller was walking in the Canberra suburb of Braddon and stumbled across a chalk drawing in the location of the incident. von Möller posted it to social media which went viral[49][50]. Opposition Leader, Peter Dutton commented on the chalk drawing in an interview with Sky News saying "I understand a chalk mark has been drawn on the footpath – it can only happen in Canberra where all those Greens and Labor staffers are"[51].
von Möller spends his time between Canberra, Australian Capital Territory and his parent's home in Donvale, Victoria[52][53][54][55].[17]
On Saturday 13th July 2024, von Möller's neighbours were killed in a housefire in Donvale which von Möller has said affected him greatly[56][57].
