Androctonus turkiyensis, Turkish fat-tailed scorpion, is a species of extremely dangerous scorpion only found in Turkey, Şanlıurfa and neighbour cities.

Description

Androctonus turkiyensis is a generalist dry climates species, an Old World scorpion. Adults can vary in colour from a light brown to blackish-brown, to black. They can grow to over 8-9 centimetres in length.

Behaviour

Although it tends to run away like most other arthropods when it sees humans, it gets easily angry and does not hesitate to use its venom.[citation needed]

Venom

The venom is very powerful and considered among the most potent among scorpions, and is known to cause human death. Deaths mostly occur with respiratory arrest, heart failure, and shock. The LD50 for this species is 0.08 mg/kg (IV) and 0.40 mg/kg (SC). The venom contains 37 different proteins and peptides depending on the protein analysis have been made.[citation needed]

Etymology

The scorpion is named after the country in which it was found; he meant an Androctonus which is endemic to Turkey.[citation needed]
