Andrew Cottingham (AKA Andrew Cocktoe) [1]; born 11 October 1961, is an English author. Among his published works are the two Mr. Winderbilt books: Winderbilt Over Floodsville [2] and Mr. Winderbilt and the Modern Conveyance [3].
He is also author and publisher of various magazines and comics, commencing with Mach 3 Comix Issue 1 (1977), described in Graphixus Magazine as 'intelligent and mature in its nature' [1], and illustrated by Martin Chaplin et al. Subsequent works included poetry and art in a variety of small press publications, including (with Roger Braithwaite) The God King of Upper Europe (1982) and The Gentleman’s Art Journal (1984), the latter described by DJ John Peel [4] as 'a curious publication' [2] and by Zigzag Magazine [5] as 'indescribably brilliant' [3], and which featured the first appearance of the Mr. Winderbilt character.
His work, including articles, comics, and prose pieces, has appeared in numerous publications since the early years of the UK small press and comix / stripzine scene.
In 2015, Past Live [6] [7], a limited edition of new and collected prose, poetry and artwork, was produced alongside long-term collaborator and designer, Simon Russell [8]. Past Live was republished in 2023.

Collaborations
[edit]Andrew Cottingham has collaborated with a variety of artists, designers, writers.
Early comics works were created with, amongst others, Martin Chaplin, pencils, inks, Mach 3 Comix 1, 1977, 1978; Bob Watkins, inks, Mach 3 Comix 2. Bob Watkins, pencils, inks (‘World Events: A Future History’, Weird Scene 1, 1983); and Steven Handley [9], who provided illustrations and covers for a number of projects.
Mr. Winderbilt was originally visualised by Phil Elliott [10] [11] who provided designs and illustrations for this humorous retro world, a stylistic mantle taken on by Simon Russell, illustrator, designer [12], over the course of the first two published books.
Other collaborators include: Jamie Reynolds, comics, Excerpts 1 (1989), Simon Cottingham, art/ illustration various projects, and comics, Past Live (2015, 2023).
Simon Russell also drew the pastiche postmodern comic strip, Dachau Playground (1982), and was the designer and illustrator behind more recent publications, Past Live, and Day Return to Lyonesse (2023) [13] [14].
Cottingham has worked on and off for a number of years with author, Roger Braithwaite, with whom he has co-edited and published various works, including the Little Big Books Poetry Scrapbook (1983) and The Gentleman’s Art Journal (1984).
In 2023, Cottingham edited Day Return to Lyonesse [15] [16], a collection of poetry by Roger Braithwaite, with illustrations by Simon Russell. Interviewed on BBC Radio Manchester [17] in 2024, Braithwaite speculated how having high blood pressure prior to a heart attack may have propelled him to complete this series of witty verses [4].
