The American Board of Sexology is a professional verification organization comprising doctoral professors, clinical sex therapists, sexologists and researchers in sex to provide peer reviews of its applicants and award certifications in the field of sexology.

History and overview

American Board of Sexology was founded by William Granzig, Ph.D. in 1989[1] and has a volunteer peer review board. The board comprises professionals by both specialty and by geographic location. Applicants to be certified are degree and certification verified with the educational institution or training program. The applicants business or employment is verified, licensed and insured depending upon local regulations. Social media, publications, practice website, online reviews, group affiliations, and online media are reviewed. Finally, a comprehensive background check is performed to verify if the professional is able to practice legally.[2]

The board offers certifications to sexual health practitioners, researchers, educators, trainers, bloggers, vloggers, media personalities, trade professionals and authors in four categories: Certified Sexologist, Board Certified Diplomate, Certified Sexology Educator, Certified Public Information Sexologist, and Certified Sexology Device Specialist.[3]

Specialty certifications include Certified Holistic, Somatic, and Tantra. Finally an Apprentice in Sexology and Mentor in Sexology are offered for those professionals in the beginning and toward the ending of their career.[3]

  • Ava Cadell, Ph.D. is a former actress, writer, producer and currently a therapist and speaker on issues of sexuality.
  • Ruth Westheimer, Ed.D., better known as Dr. Ruth, was a German-American sex therapist, talk show host, author, professor, and Holocaust survivor.
  • Gloria Brame, Ph.D. is an author, educator, and advocate for safe, sane, and consensual relating, especially among the bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism, fetish, and LGBTQ communities
  • Ramesh Maheshwari. MD is a Member of Legislative assembly from Mundra constituency in Gujarat for its 13th legislative assembly.
  • William Granzig, Ph.D. was the president, professor and dean of Clinical Sexology at the American Academy of Clinical Sexology. He also founded the American Board of Sexology.
