Alexandra Zakharova "OZA" (born 1993), is a French artist living in Paris. She is known for her work involved for sustainable environment using different media and particularly with analogue photography.

Background and early career

Alexandra Zakharova was born in 1993 in Slavutych, Kyiv Oblast.

At the age of 6, trained by her father in analogue photography and composition she makes her debut in photography ^[1]

Her first camera was an old Zenith for 10 years until 2009, then it was an Hasselblad and finally in 2012 an Olympus OM-1N MD dating from the 70's which was used by the police to take photo of criminal scenes.^[2]

Having joined the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine she learned in addition of photography, music, painting, and filming.

She obtain her inspiration from art and all the journeys she mades early on, she visited more than 40 countries.^[1]

Documentary

The Ukrainian Revolution in 2014

In 2014, The Ukrainian revolution (also known as the Euromaidan Revolution or Revolution of Dignity) took place in Ukraine. Alexandra covered this event using her analogue camera with a series of photo in black and white.^[3]

Technique

On top of using traditional analogue photography technique, Alexandra is using for most of her work double exposition, without any automated adjustment, to bring in light contrasts between different subjects:

Urbanization
Society

In these fantasy photographies, she plays with contrast of the everyday life. Nature get mixed with buildings, modernity with old-school, industrialisation with ecologie and even the rich with the poor. These oneirics worlds bring the spectator on the reflection of his world.^[1]

« I'm working like some kind of social researcher. I'm looking for contradictions in the society by drawing attention to the contrast of the daily life. The main idea is to combine two subjects in conflict and create a mix that will bring on social reflection to people »^[1]

Painting

Simultaneously of her photography, Alexandra Zakharova is also doing oil paintings. Her paintings using dry up plant and epoxy resins are in the abstract art style.

Jewelry

During the 1st COVID-19 lockdown in France in mars 2020 she started doing jewelry crafting using the same technique as in her paintings : epoxy resins to contain dry up plants she collected during her trips all around the globe.
