Alex Sampson (born January 20, 2004) is a Canadian singer-songwriter. He has released 26 original songs since the start of his career in 2019 and competed in the semi-finals of Season 19 of America's Got Talent.[1] As of December 16, 2024, Sampson has over 58 million total views on his YouTube channel,[2] over 97 million likes on his TikTok account,[3] and over 900,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.[4]

Early life

[edit]

Sampson was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and was raised in Atikokan, Ontario by his parents, Jennifer and Darren Sampson.[5][6] He has one brother named Simon Sampson.[6] Sampson attended Northern Lakes K-12 School in the Rainy River District School Board.[7]

Career

[edit]

2019-2023: Early career, TikTok, and YouTube

[edit]

Sampson's career started with uploading various covers to his TikTok account in 2019. The first cover he uploaded to his YouTube channel was "Lie To Me" by 5 Seconds of Summer, which was shared just before he turned 15 years old.[8] In the following month, he continued to share more covers, including "Superficial Love" by Ruth B and "Little Things" by One Direction.[2] Sampson states that he was inspired by 5 Seconds of Summer and One Direction, which is reflected in his covers and subsequent discography.[9]

His professional career started when photographer David Esterson reached out to Sampson, asking if he would like to visit Los Angeles to do some photoshoots and record some songs.[10] In August 2019, he recorded his first single, titled "Stay Here".[10] He filmed the music video in Atikokan and posted it on his YouTube channel on November 15, 2019, which has since garnered over 3.2 million views.[10][11] Later that year, he collaborated with Australian pop singer Indiana Massara on a holiday-themed single, "COLD".[9]

Between 2019 and 2023, Sampson released 16 original songs including "Play Pretend", which is his most popular song by play count (over 18.5 million on Spotify).[4]

Sampson played his first live show on February 23, 2023, where he opened for vaultboy's The Vaultboy Tour at The Drake Underground in Toronto, Canada.[12]

In November 2023, Sampson was featured on People Magazine's Talented Emerging Artists list.[13]

2024: America's Got Talent and touring

[edit]

2024 has been Sampson's most productive year to date, with the release of 10 original songs. On January 19, 2024, Sampson released his first EP, "Blurry Vision", which contains 6 songs including "Play Pretend".

Alex Sampson auditioned on America's Got Talent Season 19, where he sang his original song, "Pretty Baby".[14] The four-judge panel unanimously approved him to advance to the next round of the competition.[14] Simon Cowell, one of the most critical judges on the show, immediately said "That was so good" following Sampson's performance.[15] During the quarter-finals on August 20, 2024, Sampson performed another original song, "If You Were My Girl", earning him a spot in the semi-finals.[16] On September 11, Sampson sang his third original song of the season, "Wallflower". Despite the strong support of America's Got Talent fans, Sampson did not progress to the finals.[1]

On November 1, 2024, Sampson announced on social media that he would be opening for Alexander Stewart's Canadian The Homecoming Tour alongside singer-songwriter Billianne.[17] From November 17 to December 1, Sampson played seven shows in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Toronto, and Montreal.[18]

On December 16, 2024, Sampson announced on social media that he would be opening for the North American leg of Jamie Miller's 2025 Long Way Home world tour. Sampson is expected to play 16 shows from January 22 to February 20, with all but one show taking place in the United States.[19]

Sampson's "Pretty Baby" is currently on the iHeartRadio Canada Top 40 charts.[20]
