Alessandro Rolandi (born April 18, 1971) is an Italian multimedia artist, researcher, educator, and social activist. He is known for his work that explores social intervention and relational dynamics within the field of art.[1] Rolandi has lived and worked in various locations, including Beijing from 2002 to 2020, and is currently based in Bern, Switzerland.[2]

Early life and education

Rolandi was born in Pavia, Italy, where he began his academic journey by studying chemistry at the universities of Pavia and Siena.[2] His artistic education includes training in theater at the Scuola Europea di Danza e Teatro Carcano in Milan and experimental theater and film making with Dominique Defazio and Eleonora Marino. [2]He furthered his studies with a Master’s degree in the History of Art & Market at Christie’s Education in Paris and Cambridge University[2], as well as obtaining a certificate in Asian Environmental Humanities from Zurich University. [2]

Rolandi received formal training in plastic arts through frequent visits to the studios of professional artists. During this time, he interacted closely with notable figures such as the painter Oliviero Masi and the sculptors Saint Clair Cemin [2] and Not Vital, serving as a pupil, friend, and mentee to them. He is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Global Media and Digital Culture at SOAS, University of London. [2]

Rolandi's career has various roles, including multimedia and performance artist, researcher, writer, and educator. His artistic practice focuses on expanding the definition of art beyond traditional frameworks, engaging with social issues through decentralized and autonomous practices.[3] His work often combines analog and digital formats, allowing for a broader engagement with diverse communities.[4] [5]

Social Sensibility R&D Department

In 2010, Rolandi founded the Social Sensibility R&D Department at Bernard Controls Industries in Beijing[6][7], where he developed projects that integrate artistic practice into the workplace.[6] [7]This initiative aims to substitute creativity and impulsiveness among local artists and factory employees, emphasizing collaboration and exploration. The department has continued to operate in Paris/Gonesse since 2016. [6][8][7]

Rolandi has been actively involved in education throughout his career, providing lectures and mentorship at various institutions. His teaching philosophy emphasizes the integration of art with social issues, encouraging students to explore creative solutions to contemporary challenges. [5][8]

Rolandi conducted lectures on art history and market dynamics, exploring the intricate relationship between artistic value and market trends at Christie’s Education in Paris.[9] Additionally, at Tsinghua University in Beijing[8], Rolandi offered courses and workshops that examined contemporary art practices and their social implications[8], prompting students to reflect on the role of art in society. At NYU Shanghai, Rolandi engaged students in discussions about the intersections of art, culture, and technology, exploring how these elements influence one another. [8]Additionally, Rolandi participated in a research-creation program at Ecole Offshore in Shanghai, focusing on globalization and its impact on artistic expression while analyzing how cultural exchanges shape contemporary art practices.
