From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Al Yelo or Al Iyelo (Arabic: اليلو, romanizedal-Iyelo) is one of the Arab clan in the Arabian Peninsula.

History

[edit]

The Al Yelo family is of Alan origin. According to the Alagir society, the Eloatæ were descendants of the legendary Os-Bagatar, who was the leader of the Alans in the 5th century. Elo was the great-great-grandson of Os Bagatar and the founder of the Eloatæ family.

In the 5th and 6th centuries, the Eloatæs were part of the Vandal-Alan army that conquered North Africa and founded the kingdom of Vandals and Alans. After the destruction of this kingdom, the Eloatæ migrated to the Arabian peninsula and eventually Arabized, becoming the Al Yelo clan (Al Yalo, Al Elo, Al Iyelo).[1][2]

After the founding of the Umayyad Caliphate, the Al Yelo clan marched into the Caucasus as part of the Arab army. The Arabs were unable to gain a foothold in the Caucasus, but part of the Al Yelo clan still remained in the Caucasus. Representatives of Al Iyelo traded with the Caucasians and soon received a surname of Eloatæ. But most of the clan still remained on the Arabian peninsula.[1][3]

Arabian Peninsula

[edit]

Most of the representatives of Al Iyelo family lives in the Arabian Peninsula, mostly in the region of Madinah.

Caucasus

[edit]

The Eloatæ settled in the Kurtat and Alagir gorges. The name of the Eloatæ in the Alagir gorge was reputed to be rich and noble. Countless flocks of sheep, herds of horses and fertile lands became the basis of their property status. In the 17th century, the Eloatæ had their own stone castle and tower in the Kurtat gorge. The Eloatæs Tower is an object of cultural heritage of federal significance[4].[2]

Among the Alagir community, the Eloatæ were also considered descendants of Os-Bagatar. The name of the Eloatæ had the status of uzden[5]. One of the famous uzdenes was Eloaty Tasultan (Tasultan Eloev), who professed Islam.[3][2]
