Accra Majestics is a nonprofit sports academy based in Accra, Ghana. Founded on July 10, 2021, by Rachel Ankomah and Khalil Njoya, the academy began as a rugby league club and evolved into a dynamic sports academy in October 2023.
History
[edit]Accra Majestics was established on July 10, 2021, with a vision to create a distinguished sports academy in Ghana. The academy started as a rugby league club and grew to become a dynamic sports academy[1] in October 2023.
Within ten days of its launch, the Accra Majestics signed an affiliate agreement with Srama Rugby League Recruitment, a global recruitment agency based in Australia.
The academy entered into a partnership[2] with Firm Foundation Rugby League Academy, a youth-focused organization. Firm Foundation was to act as a feeder club for Majestics, promoting players over the age of eighteen to the senior team with Majestics providing coaching support and scouting emerging rugby league talent.
In October 2021, the Accra Majestics collaborated with Firm Foundation to launch the “Kids Play Rugby League Too[3]” campaign. The campaign introduced rugby league to the community of Ashaiman[4], emphasizing youth participation.
Majestics and Firm Foundation worked together to introduce rugby league to schools in Nsawam, fostering interest and recruitment.
On 16 January 2022, the club made history by participating in its first ever tournament - Touch Tournament. [citation needed]
The Accra Majestics made their debut in the 9s[5] tournament held on 13th and 20th March 2022. Men and youth participated but the women's team could not take part. Men's team lost against Pirates and Nungua Tigers by an 8 - 0 score in the first and second rounds respectively. They met Pirates again in the fifth round but lost to Pirates by a 13 - 4 score.
The youth team performed well, qualifying for the finals by beating Nungua Tigers Junior team 8- 0. Ultimately finishing second by losing by 10 - 6 score to Ghana 13s 2021 Champions, African Warriors Sport Academy
The youth team also competed in the 13s Championship but fell short in the finals against African Warriors Sport Academy
In May - July, the men's team made their debut in the Ghana 13s Rugby League Championship.[6] They were defeated in the playoffs by Ghana Skolars[7]. They took the third position.
In October 2022, Accra Majestics received three sets of kits from the New South Wales Rugby League to aid in their development projects. [8]
Badge
[edit]The academy's logo features a silverback gorilla wearing a golden crown, symbolizing strength and excellence. The colours red, black, green, and gold represent the academy's values and Ghanaian heritage.
