The 2024 Warsaw mayoral election was held on 7 April 2024 to elect the next mayor of Warsaw. It took place simultaneously with elections to the Warsaw City Council and other local elections in Poland, following the Ordinance of the Prime Minister of 29 January 2024.[1] The result of the first round of the election was announced on 9 April 2024. [2]
Rafał Trzaskowski of the Civic Platform, who has served as mayor of Warsaw since 2018, was re-elected as mayor. Law and Justice stood former Masovia Voivode Tobiasz Bocheński as its candidate, The Left announced former deputy marshal of the Senate Magdalena Biejat, Confederation nominated Przemysław Wipler, and the Repair Poland Movement chose Romuald Starosielec. Janusz Korwin-Mikke ran as an independent.
Background
[edit]The mayor of Warsaw exercises executive power in the city, with responsibilities that include policing, transport, housing, planning, economic development, arts, culture, and the environment. In 2024, they controlled a budget of around 28 billion PLN.[3]
In the 2018 Polish local elections in Warsaw, the Civic Coalition gained seven seats and Law and Justice lost five.[4]
Results
[edit]The election was won by Rafał Trzaskowski of the Civic Coalition. Trzaskowski increased his share of the vote by 0.7% compared to 2018. Tobiasz Bocheński of Law and Justice came second; however, the PiS share of the vote fell by 5.4% compared to 2018. Magdalena Biejat of The Left took third place.
The turnout of 58.9% was 7.4% lower than in the previous mayoral election. The number of rejected ballot (5,540) was less than one-percent of the vote.
