In July 2023, the 16th and former president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, made a visit to Beijing, the capital of China.[1] The visit was made for the bilateral relations between China and the Philippines and the territorial disputes in the South China Sea.[2][3] The visit was controversial in the Philippines.[3]
Background
[edit]Territorial disputes
[edit]In 1970, a memorandum was published showing that the Philippines, China, and other countries owned the South China Sea. Resulting in a territorial dispute regarding the owner of the sea.
