Devane (or Devne/Deone/Davane) (Marathi: देवणे/ दवणे ) is a Marathi Toponymic clan surname native to the Indian states of Maharashtra and Karnataka,[1]meaning divine or god/deity-like.[2][3][4]

Origin

[edit]

Marathi surnames usually end with the suffix 'kar' or 'e', indicating the place of origin. or represents family traditions and professions of ancestors.[5] So they must have originally belonged to Deoni village in Udgir, Maharashtra. Some historians consider Devanagere as the origin city.[6][7] The village Deoni is famous for the Devani breed of cattle, which is a cross between Gir, Dangi and local cattle (Lal Khandari).

In 1305 A.D. Mandu or Mandavgadh in Central India was destroyed by the invaders during the reign of Rajput king Malak Dev.[8] His Pradhan (minister) was Kuka. This province was inhabited by many Chandraseniya and Chitragupta Kayasthas. After the massacre of Ain-ul-Mulk, the Commander of Allauddin Khilji, the Chitragupta Kayasthas left for the North and the Chandraseniya Kayasthas migrated to the southern India. Some of the ancient family names of these kshatriya kayasthas were territorial, such as Kshipre, Tungare, Javale, Saipute, Korde, Davane, Chitre, Tivekar, and Devpare, pointing to places extending from Oudh in North India to Maval, near Poona, to which place this small band of colonists migrated by stages of conquering hordes that came upon them one after another.[6] Davane was a territorial name from Daman, but it is supposed that these people came from Devnagar as their original seat. Devanagare became corrupted into Devane or Davane.[6]

Ethinicity

[edit]

MacCrindle's Ancient India, p. 46, mentioned the marriage of a Gupta chief with the Macedonian bride that Alexander gave him, and further possibility of the absorption of foreign blood. The Macedonian colonies of Koh-Daman, and the existence of a Daman on the Western coast, with Davane's as its residents at the present day. They might have been among the pre-historic Ruling Races as mentioned by Mr. Hewitt. The Davane's were fairer than the generality of the local residents of daman and this may all indicate the infusion of Western blood into the more powerful of these Bombay coast tribes, in the days when inter-marriages were freely allowed between different races, and the hard and fast rules of caste had not yet been conceived.[9]

Coming from the Indo-Aryan tract in the North, under the name chandrasen, and perhaps marrying fair Western women, the Davane's may have also acquired a tinge of the local Dravidian blood from Southern tracts like Guddappa, and this would account for their forming a ethinicity midway between the accepted types of the Indo-Aryan and Scytho-Dravidian races.[10][11]

Status

[edit]

They are prominent in the Marathwada and Kolhapur regions of Maharashtra[12] with many holding high political and institutional positions.[13][14] Most of them belong to Gawli (Maratha) caste[15], and trace themselves to Yadav Chandravanshiya dynasty.[16]Some also belong to veershaiva Vani community.[17] They usually follow Vaishnavism and Veerashaivism and many of them had Gotrapurusha of Lord Veerabhadra.[18]
