Desulfovibrio alkalitolerans is an alkalitolerant and sulfate-reducing bacterium of the genus of Desulfovibrio which has been isolated from a biofilm in a district heating plant in Skanderborg, Denmark. The isolation was from biofilm growing in alkaline water where there was corrosion of pipes in the heating plant.[1]

Genus

This organism belongs to the genus Desulfovibrio. The genus is mesophilic, Gram-negative, anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria. They use the dissimilatory sulfate reduction pathway to convert energy using hydrogen or organic compounds to reduce or oxidized sulfur compounds. This genus produce hydrogen sulfide gas as a byproduct. They are found in a variety of environments like marine sediments, oil fields, anaerobic waste-water treatment plants, and mud volcanoes. This genus were also found to be a small part of the gastrointestinal microbiome where they can sometimes cause issues. There are some indications that Desulfovibrio may potentially play a role in inflammatory bowel disease pathology.[2]

Isolation

From the biofilm, growing in the alkaline water of a Danish district heating system where there was corrosion of the pipes, strain RT2T was isolated. It was then cultured and enriched where they were able to then extract DNA from the strain and then sequenced using 16S rRNA. The analysis conducted showed that the strain RT2T belonged to the genus Desulfovibrio.[1]
