Defense of the Karbala City Hall,[a] also known as the Battle of the City Hall,[b] was a series of fights that took place between 3 and 6 April 2004, between soldiers of Mahdi Army, attacking the city hall of Karbala, Iraq, and defending it Polish and Bulgarian soldiers of the Multinational Division Central-South, together with the several police officers of Iraqi Police.[1][2][3][better source needed] It ended with a Polish/Bulgarian force victory, which suffered 6 killed and 13 wounded soldiers, in contrast to the attacking group, who suffered 72 deaths. On April 29, 2019 Andrzej Duda, the President of Poland awarded the Medal for the Centenary of Poland Regaining Independence to 34 soldiers who fought in the battle for Karbala City Hall.
