DHL Flight 18D was an international cargo flight that on 25 November 2024 crashed while on approach to Vilnius Airport, then slid into a two-story house in Liepkalnis . The aircraft, flying from Leipzig/Halle Airport in Leipzig, Germany, to Vilnius Airport in Vilnius, Lithuania, was on approach when it crashed into ground short of the runway. One crew member was killed and the three others were injured. No casualties were reported on the ground.[1][2][3][4]
Aircraft
[edit]The aircraft involved, manufactured in 1993, was a Boeing 737-476(SF) registered as EC-MFE with serial number 24445. It was powered by two CFM International CFM56-3C1 engines.[5] It was operated by Swiftair on behalf of DHL.[6]
Accident
[edit]The aircraft took off from the DHL hub at Leipzig Airport shortly after 03:00 local time on 25 November. The crash occurred at 04:28 (05:28 local) as it was making its final approach to Vilnius Airport. The plane narrowly missed directly hitting a two-storey house in the Liepkalnis neighbourhood, approximately 1.3 kilometers north of the airport, and landed on its courtyard, causing a fire that reached the house. One of the two pilots, a Spanish citizen, died on the spot, while three other crew members, including the other pilot, were injured and rescued.[3] All 12 occupants of the house were safely evacuated. Several roads were closed in Liepkalnis, while authorities urged people not to travel to the area.[7][6]
