Cooke Maroney (born July 3, 1984) is an American art gallery director. He has served as the director of the Gladstone Gallery since 2022 and previously worked at the Gagosian Gallery. He has been married to actress Jennifer Lawrence since 2019.

Early life

[edit]

Maroney was born on July 3, 1984, to James Maroney, an art dealer, and Suki Fredericks, in New York City.[1][2][3] He has a younger sister named Annabelle, born around the time Maroney began kindergarten.[4][5] In 1986, the family moved to Leicester, Vermont, so they could give Maroney a quieter life.[3][4] Maroney's parents opened Oliver Hill Farm, a dairy and animal farm in Middlebury, Vermont, in 1990.[3][6][7] A 1994 fire ruined much of the farm.[6]

After graduating from Middlebury Union High School,[6] Maroney earned a degree in art history at New York University, graduating in 2007.[2][8][5][9][10]

Career

[edit]

After graduating from college, Maroney began a job at the Gagosian Gallery in New York City.[5][10][11] However, he has since quit that job.[5] Around 2022, Maroney became the director-at-large of Gladstone 64, the Gladstone Gallery's Upper East Side location.[12][13] Maroney has had several notable clients, such as Matthew Barney, Anish Kapoor, Richard Prince, and Lena Dunham's father Carroll Dunham, who has some of his art on display in Maroney's gallery.[3][11]

"He's definitely respected," a source told The Cut. "He's not a big player, but he's a player. I'd say he understands what good art is...I know that he likes contemporary but I know he also appreciates modernism. I think he really has solid taste in art and he's a very good art dealer, and I expect a fruitful career out of him."[11]

Maroney has attended a number of "art-world parties." He has been seen at parties alongside Stavros Niarchos and Waris Ahluwalia. "He's definitely fun-loving but I wouldn't say he's out of control," a source told The Cut. "He likes to have fun, a young good [New York] guy who likes to participate and have fun."[11]

Maroney's private Instagram page has several notable followers, such as Paris Hilton, Derek Blasberg, and Anna Wintour's daughter Bee Shaffer.[11]

Personal life

[edit]

Maroney met actress Jennifer Lawrence in May 2018, through Lawrence's friend Laura Simpson.[5] They began dating the next month and got engaged in early February of 2019.[14][7] Their engagement party took place at The River Café in Brooklyn.[15] Maroney and Lawrence were married on October 19, 2019, at the Belcourt of Newport mansion in Newport, Rhode Island.[3][5][7] For their honeymoon, they stayed at the NIHI Sumba Resort in Indonesia, at the home of the owner Chris Burch.[16][17] After returning home, Lawrence became pregnant but miscarried.[18] In September 2021, Lawrence's representative revealed that Lawrence and Maroney were expecting their first child.[14] A son was born on February 23, 2022.[5] Lawrence and Maroney named him Cy, after Cy Twombly, one of Maroney's favorite artists.[19] The family lives together, most often in a townhouse in the West Village area of New York City and sometimes in Bel Air, Los Angeles.[20][21][22] As of October 2024, he and Lawrence are expecting their second child.[23]
