Conor D. McGuinness (born 1985/1986) is an Irish Sinn Féin politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Waterford constituency since the 2024 general election.[2]

Background

[edit]

McGuinness is a fluent Irish speaker who lives in the Rinn Gaeltacht.[1]

McGuinness was an active trade unionist with Unite the Union in Dungarvan, having served on its youth committee until 2017. He was also a founding member of Laochas, a youth mental health organisation in Waterford, and was recognised as the face of Dungarvan’s credit union.[1]

McGuinness is the nephew of the career criminal Cyril "Dublin Jimmy" McGuinness, who was involved in the 2019 abduction and torture of Kevin Lunney, a Quinn Industrial Holdings executive. Cyril McGuinness, who had over 50 convictions and was linked to international crime gangs, the Provisional IRA, and dissident republican groups, died in November 2019 following a police raid in England. Conor McGuiness had no relationship with Cyril McGuinness and was not aware he was related to him until a few years before Cyril's death.[3]

Political career

[edit]

McGuiness joined Sinn Féin in 2001.[4]

McGuinness was elected to Waterford City and County Council representing Dungarvan / Lismore in the 2019 Irish local elections.[5]

Conor McGuinness is a member of Sinn Féin's Ard Chomhairle, the party's central decision-making body.[1]

McGuinness was elected to the Dáil in the 2024 general election.

Political views

[edit]

The Phoenix, which offers opinions on Irish politics from an Irish republican viewpoint, described McGuiness in 2023 as an "old-school republican".[1]
