[edit]"Arranged hierarchically" - not at the moment. Rich Farmbrough, 14:13, 17 April 2010 (UTC).
- A useless category. All upwards category links are not navigation worthy. Some of subcategories probably are navigation worthy, but these are buried under a huge number of uninteresting categories which one unlikely would ever search in the "Category: Wikipedia template categories". It would be better to allow uncategorized templates and uncategorized (non-article) categories than to make many really necessary categories virtually unsearchable via the downward direction of the categories graph. Template/Category
[edit]Does every template need its own category? I mean, if the category name is the name of the template and it's the only page in that category. I mean, there are policies about WP:SMALLCAT but that usually refers to categories holding a few pages, not ones with just one page. Liz Read! Talk! 21:34, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
- @Incnis Mrsi and Liz: See Template talk:Template category § Remove auto-categorization. Wbm1058 (talk) 17:00, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
- oh, I see. Incnis Mrsi retired at the end of March, and Liz hasn't edited since the end of June. Wbm1058 (talk) 23:58, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
Counter category
[edit]Perhaps this is useful as some form of {{Counter category}}, though currently that template is only used on monthly clean-up categories, and this isn't a clean-up category. It does quickly tell me that there are currently 26,136 total Wikipedia template categories, though. I suppose there's no harm in just leaving it be. I clarified the documentation to say that this is an alphabetical list or index of all categories of templates, and that Category:Wikipedia templates is the top-level category for the hierarchical arrangement. – Wbm1058 (talk) 14:30, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for that. I think it should probably be hidden. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 10:47, 5 January 2018 (UTC).
Tiny categories
[edit]There are a number of categories, such as Category:13-Team bracket templates, Category:87th United States Congress templates, and Category:1881–82 college soccer standings templates (these are just a few of the many visible on the 1st page) that only have a few (or even 1) template. I'd like to combine some of these, and have the templates be categorized to more general categories (eg Category:United States Congress templates) and then nominate for deletion the empty categories left behind. Given the vast number of potential changes/deletions this would involve, I'd like to know if there is any consensus about this, or if there are any objections, or supporters?
Also, for the "cut off" of what size category should be merged and then deleted, I would start with categories with only 1 or 2 templates, and, if there are no issues that this causes, would proceed to categories of 5 or less templates. For any other categories, I would separately discuss them later.
Thought? --DannyS712 (talk) 23:53, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
- DannyS712, category talk pages are usually limited to discussion of the single category page and its contents. Such general questions about categorization of templates are better suited for Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Templates. —andrybak (talk) 10:01, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
