[edit]- Should Category:Smooth functions be a subcategory of Category:Types of functions?? as an example
- Or more generally, should Category:X (X being a type of function) be a subcategory of Category:Types of functions?
- Or would it better to have subcategories of the form Category:Types of X?
- (Category:Types of X would have to be a subcategory of Category:X)
- Or would it better to have subcategories of the form Category:Types of X?

- In the case of Analytic function in categories Category:Smooth functions and Category:Types of functions, would it be better to diffuse Category:Types of functions, or replace both categories with Category:Types of smooth functions Brad7777 (talk) 17:28, 6 November 2011 (UTC)
Types? or Properties?
[edit]I came to this category page because I was trying to find a more suitable category for Involution (mathematics) as a property of a function. It was categorized under Category:Functions and mappings, which seems awfully broad. On the other hand, identity function is currently classified here, as a type of function. So... first step, I changed the categorization of involution.
But I also wonder why this category is called types of functions rather than properties of functions. After all, we have Category:Properties of binary operations which covers analogous properties for two-argument functions. And I tend to think of things like continuity, piecewise linearity, convexity, etc. as properties of the function -- after all, there is no tree-like taxonomy for all these properties.
