[edit]

The RN used a MK23 torpedo after the 2ns world war which was eventually replaced by the Tigerfish Mk 24.

The Mk 23 was a wire guided weapon which used an outboard dispenser deploying 10 000 of single strand wire to communicate with the operator. Towards the end of the 60s, all the fleet torpedoes were failing due to a problem with the Guidance Units made by GEC. This meant at extreme range the operator lost contol. The trouble was caused beause an instruction by naval stores to replace the germanium diodes type CV7013 by the new silicon type CV7031 meant the AGC characteristics of the AGC circuit were different & to fix it, all the torpedo guidance units had to be recalled & the diodes replaced by the old germanium type.

The error was compounded by the similarity in the NATO code numbers for the diodes. As soon as a diode was replaved, the guidance unit immediately returned to full service.

Category missing for "German Torpedoes"...

[edit]

Hi, does anybody knows why the existing Category:World War II German torpedoes (which aimed to group all torpedoes designed / built / used by Germany) is now missing?
