[edit]Without addressing the question of whether Thai practice is relevant to this purpose, i've removed here the following:
- Note on sorting:
- Thailand people are usually called by the first name, even telephone books are sorted by the first name. Thus when adding the category link to a person from Thailand adding the sorting extension isn't necessary. Thus instead of [[Category:Thai people|Lastname, firstname]] the plain [[Category:Thai people]] should be used. This of course also applies to the subcategories.
to be reworked. Every descendant of Category: People needs piping, bcz failure to pipe is almost always a clear sign of giving no thot to the issue of sorting of the titles, i.e., of ignorance of the purpose of Cat piping. Whatever special circumstances may be appropriate for Thai, Icelandic, and perhaps/sometimes Arabic names (the potential cases that i recall becoming aware of), accommodation of that difference does not extend to forcing consultation of special instructions to recognize the difference between well-informed response to such cases and simple neglect. So keep it simple: pipe the name, and we can argue later abt which way to pipe it, but don't leave it unpiped.

- I'm embarrassed at having said above
- the potential cases that i recall becoming aware of
- a few days after having a valuably informative discussion about Eritrean names, which IIRC have the given name first, the father's (given) name last, and like Thai names, use the given name alone but not the following name alone, and thus alphabetize by the given name. While i think i've been offering some valuable insights in this area, it also think my forgetfulness illustrates that my priorities make me (whether or not my ignorance level does) a thotful dabbler in this area rather than an expert. Thanks.
