[edit]Tagged {{cleanup}} because most bridges listed in this category should be moved to Category:Suspended deck bridges. --Una Smith (talk) 07:00, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
all listed
[edit]Can someone confirm whether ALL suspension bridge articles should be directly listed in this category even though they may also be listed in a Category:Suspension bridges by country and Category:Suspension bridges by type subcategory? Hmains (talk) 04:42, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
- I would argue that all the suspension bridge articles should be dispersed to relevant subcategories by type and by country, leaving here only those articles for which relevant subcategories do not (yet) exist. Consider the alternative: if all suspension bridge articles should be in this category as well as in subcategories, then all those articles also should be in Category:Bridges, right? --Una Smith (talk) 15:33, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
- And what you describe is what I have doing to categories everywhere (I mostly just work on categories)--and getting some resistance here and there. So I am thinking about this. Some editors want be able to see all articles at once about a subject and not have to wade through multiple levels of subcats. So, what about a category that is devoted to listing every article on a subject. In this case, Category:All suspension bridges and yes, Category:All bridges in addition to whatever subcat breakout now exists or might be added in the future. Can you see a benefit for the (mostly one-time) work this would take? For example, whenever someone wanted to add a new, broad subcat, they could search through 'all cat' all at once and not have to go through every subcat looking for what they want to find. - The resistance I have noticed is to your creating intersection categories (bridge type X in country Y) and populating union categories (all bridges, in addition to bridges of type X). I agree that for category intersections it is better to use a category search tool. I think the search tools will also allow you to collapse categories to obtain their union: eg, see every photo in a category or any of its subcategories. --Una Smith (talk) 02:02, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
Please see Wikipedia:Categorization#Duplicate_categorization_rule
For example, Angers Bridge is not placed directly into Category:Bridges, because it belongs to the non-distinguished (systematic) subcategory Category:Bridges in France...

ie they should NOT be in the category Category:Suspension bridges, if you wish to make a page List of suspension bridges, you can.FengRail (talk) 04:12, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
