While the phrase British Isles has traditionally been used by geographers and in general usage to apply to the islands of Britain(England, Wales and Scotland) and Ireland (Nothern Ireland and the republic of Ireland) it is now considered objectionable by some Irish people, since part of this territory, the republic of Ireland, is not British. It is preferable therefore that this category be renamed Surnames of British and Irish origin or Surnames originating in Britain and Ireland. What are the implications of renaming categories?
