Sufis by nationality
[edit]'Good Olfactory' has created the category http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Sufis_by_nationality and (for example) changed the category for Idries Shah from 'Sufis' to 'Indian Sufis'. Is this okay with you, given that in this case, for example, though born in India Idries Shah worked and lived in both the East and West. He was largely based in Kent, England and his main task was to bring the teachings to the modern West. EricT (talk) 13:24, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
- I don't think there's any dispute that this person's nationality is "Indian". Good Ol’factory (talk) 14:12, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
- There is no sub-category for Sufis of unassertained nationality, but these should not be left out altogether.
- From the Idries Shah discussion page:
- To the IP contributor -- please understand that nationality is not the same as ethnic descent. No one disputes that Shah had Afghan ancestors on his father's side. However, as far as I remember, Shah's family had been banished to India several generations earlier, following their support for the British, against the majority of Afghans. Shah himself was born in India. So if you would like to put Afghan as nationality in the info box, please provide sourced, verifiable evidence that Shah had an Afghan passport – I don't believe he did. I don't know whether he also had, or acquired, British nationality. It's probably safest, for now, to leave the nationality field blank. Jayen466 00:41, 11 September 2007 (UTC).

- Sufis of "unascertained" nationality can be placed in the parent Category:Sufis or other appropriate subcategories. As I said, I haven't seen anyone disputing that Shah is considered "Indian" nationality — the dispute appears to be whether he was Afghan or British. Good Ol’factory (talk) 14:34, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
