Naidu (meaning leader, from Sankrutam-Nayaka) though is a telugu name, but there is a seizable population in Thamizh Nadu who carry the surname Naickers, who do not derive their roots in present day Andhra pradesh.Vanniyar in north Arcot, South Arcot and Puducherry carry the title naickers but speak Thamizh as their mother tongue. They are also known as Gramani Naickers. Legend has it that, Vanniyars aka Padayachis, were conferred with the title naickers by the Naick rulers, who were impressed with the courage and valor of the vanniyar community. The Thamizh speaking nayakars are predomoinantly found in the northern Belt of present day Thamizh Nadu
