Why create this category?
[edit]I was at a loss as to where to usefully categorize a company such as Cellomics whose primary mission is to design, manufacture and sell complex technology platforms for the conduct of biological research; or Fisher Scientific whose primary mission is to sell 3rd party manufactured goods for the conduct of biological research. I think the name is a little cumbersome, but I couldn't think of a more appropriate name that would not also include contract research organizations, whose primary mission is to conduct research on behalf of a customer rather than provide information and material to a customer in order to facilitate said customers' own research.
