A US reader would understand this category to mean the opposite of what it does as public schools are what we call "state" schools. Perhaps it should be changed to the universally understood "private schools" ? Mrsteviec 11:07, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

a US reader should click on the public school link and then understand. Deano 11:35, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Public vs Independent

[edit]

Could someone explain why this category has been named with the most contentious term for fee-paying schools? There are varying definitions of public schools even within London, whereas the meaning of independent school is universally accepted. A number of the schools in this category make no claim whatsoever to the title of public school, but every single one of them would fall under the category of independent school without any possibility of dispute. Also, this would to a certain extent clear up the point made by Mrsteviec above with greater convenience to the user. Ejgm 16:31, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Independent" would make things a lot easier for our Yankish counterparts... but for some reason all UK-independent-school categories are "public schools". It'd be one hell of a mission to change them all. DJR (Talk) 21:01, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I shall have a look at the AutoWikiBrowser tool, as it seems to be capable of simplifying such a task. Hopefully a few more people might respond to the idea, and then I might have a crack at it. Ejgm 16:01, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I support any change away from "Public schools", within reason. Mrsteviec 09:02, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
