Purpose and justification of category?

[edit]

It looks like most of these articles should go under "Towns and villages" but a few are other kinds of area, so a discussion is needed on handling... any opinions? SeoR (talk) 21:09, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I think that most "towns" in Fingal would fail the test of "prove that it's a town, not just a commonly used term" and would in in any case be incapable of demarcation of delimitiation. Laurel Lodged (talk) 21:24, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
This I agree - in deeper history none had much substance, but in more recent times, I think the case is clear for Balbriggan and Swords, and as "small towns," Rush, maybe Skerries. Then there are "big suburbs" which still lack town structure, but have populations bigger than many county towns (Blanchardstown, Castleknock), and the suburbs of 15-25k people centred on villages (Malahide, Howth, Portmarnock). Much as many of us like them, these latter are *not* towns. All in all, tough.

But my point for now was simpler - we have the category Places in Fingal, with a few suburbs and a few other units, and Towns and villages, with most towns, villages and suburbs. Should we just have one (Towns / villages / suburbs of Fingal OR Settlements in Fingal, etc.)?SeoR (talk) 21:30, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
