Category talk:Organization design

Rationale

I wanted to explain why I created this category. Organization design is the common term within Organizational studies to refer to topics like:

• Boundaryless organization
• Decentralization
• Formal organization
• Functional organization
• Middle management
• Cross-functional team
• Industrial democracy
• Multidimensional organization
• Matrix management
• Total institution
• Organizational structure
• Organizational hierarchy
• Flat organization
• Organizational chart

Creating a real category for this topic is preferable to putting these terms in the generic category Category:Aspects of organizations, and they're getting lost in the overcrowded Category:Organizational studies and human resource management. Some of these articles were listed in Category:Types of organization, but that category isn't about (and shouldn't be about) Organization design.

I linked to this discussion from my edit summaries, but my edits are being reverted. (1 2 3) Please, if you disagree with what I'm saying, let's reach consensus over discussion instead of edit warring.

Category:Types of organization should link to articles about organizations by function or purpose:

• Booster club
• Cooperative
• Presidium
• Professional association
• Society

Such topics are distinct from ways of structuring organizations, which shouldn't be linked there:

• Boundaryless organization
• Flat organization
• Functional organization
• Organismic organisation

I don't advocate emptying Category:Types of organization. However, I advocate limiting its scope to articles about organizations by function or purpose. --Pnm (talk) 20:51, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

Would Organizational architecture or Organizational structure be better title for this group of articles? In organization design, the topic is described as being about roles, processes, and structure, which a topic like matrix organization seems to demonstrate perfectly. That may be inconsistent with general usage of the term. I'm not opposed to finding a better name for the grouping. --Pnm (talk) 22:26, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, I was about to add a comment here. Organizational structure is a better term but still it doesn't encapsulate all the above articles (Middle Management, Decentralization, as well as others). Types of organizations is not bad and is there for most of them (Flat, Functional, Matrix, etc...).Pm master 22:30, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for discussing it here. I'd be fine with renaming it "Organizational structure." Probably the overlapping scope of the articles needs to be worked out too. Regarding Category:Types of organization, see my comment above. --Pnm (talk) 22:57, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

Again, I'm not sure organizational structure encapsulates all the articles. Now for types of organization, logically it should include Functional / Matrix / Flat / etc... I suggest we leave this as is for now (no adding/removing categories), as the need is not really there. Pm master 23:04, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

It seems that organization design is logically a parent of organizational structure (see http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/organizational-design.html for example). It seems more effective to start with the more general category, if we're not creating two. --Pnm (talk) 01:54, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
