Category talk:Mobile phones
This category was nominated for deletion on 18 January 2009. The result of the discussion was keep current name. |
This category is for articles about end user devices that are phones and articles about common phone features only. Generic mobile telecommunications features should be put in the appropriate subcategory of Category:Mobile telecommunications.
Articles directed to network infrastructure, protocols, handshaking, service plans, and how end user devices interact with networks DO NOT GO HERE. Articles about end user device user interface features DO GO HERE. A phone is being defined as: An end user device that is dialable through a telecommunications network with at least a tangible dialing interface. |

Consistency when naming and categorizing phones
[edit]I notice that the Motorola phones are in disarray, as far as how they are named and categorized. Since the majority of the phones in the Mobile phones category are listed as “Nokia XXX”, it only makes sense that phones by other companies are listed in the same way: (example: “Motorola V551” not “V551”).
I also notice a problem with categorization, which also needs to be consistent. Motorola phones should be categorized under Category: Mobile phones and Category:Motorola products. I have found at least 1 or 2 that are not.
Let’s make this somewhat organized, is anyone with me? Mikecnn 12:34, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
- Only actual phones should be in this category. Mobile software, websites, partners, content providers, publishers, carriers, etc. should be in Category Mobile. Mathiastck 20:34, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
Definition of phone
[edit]Anything now given a Mobile phones category should be phones, i.e. dialable through the telephone network or Internet, and not other mobile devices such as pagers, CB radios, walkie-talkies, police radios, etc. which do not connect to the telephone network and are not dialable. To preserve this distinction, categories containing the word phone such as mobile phone should be preserved and not replaced by a broader category such as mobile telecommunications user equipment. - I added a definition to the main category page to clearly define what is and is not a phone (hopefully). If you think the definition is too broad or narrow or otherwise needs adjustment, please discuss.Mojodaddy (talk) 17:06, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
