Hierarchy proposal
[edit]This is my proposal for a new organizational hierarchy for articles related to forms of abortion. I believe this solution would address User:Joie de Vivre's concerns, which seem to be separating non-standard practices from standard medical practices, and my concerns, which are that similarily-themed articles be grouped together for easier navigation. Refinement in the specifity of subcategories is almost always an improvement to navigation. :-)
- Category:Types of abortion (miscarriage is listed at this level)
- Category:Induced abortion (things like self-induced abortion, late-term abortion, and selective reduction go here, as they are "types of abortion" and "induced abortion[s]," but not specific methods).
- Category: Methods of induced abortion (this would replace Category:Methods of abortion, and be limited to specific procedures, with these being divided into two categories based on type.)
- Category:Medical abortion
- Category:Surgical abortion
- Category: Methods of induced abortion (this would replace Category:Methods of abortion, and be limited to specific procedures, with these being divided into two categories based on type.)
- Category:Induced abortion (things like self-induced abortion, late-term abortion, and selective reduction go here, as they are "types of abortion" and "induced abortion[s]," but not specific methods).
- Category:Abortifacients (this could be a nested sub-category of either Category:Induced abortion or Category:Medical abortion — either would work, in my opinion).

- This creates more problems than it solves. Self-induced abortion, late-term abortion, and selective reduction do not group together into any particular category. This was evidenced when Category:Forms of abortion was deleted. Recreating that deleted category as Category:Types of abortion is not acceptable; I will oppose such a move. - How does it create more problems than it solves? There is obviously a deficiency in the current system of categorization: you aren't satifisfied with it, nor am I. This is a solution which I believe will address both of our concerns. If you don't agree with some aspect of the proposal, please work with me and suggest a manner in which it could be improved, instead of summarily throwing the dishes out with the dishwater.
- The "Forms of abortion" sub-section at Abortion includes everything from spontaneous abortion (miscarriage), to standard surgical procedures, like D&C, to historical practices, such as the Southern Asian technique of massage abortion and herbal abortion. You are the only one who has ever objected to the long-standing "Forms of abortion" category in the WikiProject Abortion system of categorization. -Severa (!!!) 19:58, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
- I'd like to comment, but I'm not exactly sure what Joie de Vivre's concerns are. Could someone direct me to the previous discussion on this? It seems like the issue is that there are 3 (or 5, if you include miscarriage and feticide) articles that do not refer to specific medical procedures, but still categorize a type of abortion. Since there are only 11 articles in this category, I don't think creating the 4 subcategories that Severa proposed is necessary, however separating out the specific medical procedures from the more general classification could be helpful. I could see something like the following working, however I'm not sure if this addresses Joie's concerns.
- Abortion by kind (includes miscarriage, self-induced abortion, late-term abortion, and selective reduction as the misc, uncategorized left overs)
- Methods of abortion (includes the 8 or so articles on specific procedures)
- Abortifacients
- Methods of abortion (includes the 8 or so articles on specific procedures)

- It's simple, yet seperates things that aren't as closely related. Anyway.-Andrew c 00:12, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
- Joie's concerns were raised in the Category:Forms of abortion CfD. I don't think that there's an issue with having a category with only one or two articles inside of it. Look at a lot of the subcategories in Category:Pro-life activists or Category:Pro-choice organizations. I think it's better to create a more specific, targetted subcategory, than to have articles mingled together and less-organized, or to shoehorn them into categories where they might not fit as well. Besides, I think that a surgical/medical division would be helpful, as would a division in categorization based on induced/spontaneous. -Severa (!!!) 01:27, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
