Should "State Librarians" and their equivalents (e.g., "Librarian of Congress") be considered librarians, even if they do not have a library degree and did not practice as librarians? I note that "Oliver Everett" is included here, despite the apparent absence of actual librarianship, and James Billingsley (Librarian of Congress) is not so included. Perhaps a "State Librarians" or "Official Librarians" or "Titular Librarians" category would be more accurate? LQ 18:31, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I note that in a profession dominated by women that somehow there are disproportionate numbers of male librarians listed here. (About 30 male librarians and about 10 female librarians. It's not as bad on the "American librarians" category: 22 M to 17 F, which may reflect actual gender disparities in "notability" and not just gender disparities in recognizing or promoting notability. We wiki-editors need to be very careful that we are accurately assessing the contributions of folks despite an institutionalized sexist tendency to minimize and downgrade the accomplishments of women. There may be many reasons for the disproportionate representation of male librarians, but such a disparity is striking in a female-dominated field, and suggests that we haven't done a good job of non-sexist evaluations and inclusions.
