[edit]Are these dukedoms really dormant? Dormant implies that they are unclaimed, but in theory extant. I think these are all either forfeit or extinct, which are separate matters altogether. Mackensen (talk) 11:55, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I think they're mostly extinct.
- Duke of Albemarle - This one is extinct
- Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven - Extinct
- Duke of Aumale - This one was forfeit, and then would have become extinct a few years later
- Duke of Buckingham - The Stafford dukedom was forfeit for some time, but is probably also extinct by now. The Villiers dukedom is extinct. The Sheffield dukedom is extinct. The Grenville dukedom is extinct.
- Duke of Cambridge - A bunch of extinct ones. It might be arguable that Augustus Fitzgeorge ought to have inherited the most recent one - he was the son of the 2nd Duke of Cambridge who was born after the Duke's wedding with his long-time mistress, but the wedding was non-approved. And he died without heirs, anyway.
- Duke of Clarence - all extinct, I think
- Duke of Cleveland - extinct
- Duke of Connaught and Strathearn - extinct
- Duke of Cornwall - this one is not extinct or dormant - it is currently held by the Prince of Wales
- Duke of Cumberland - this one is suspended. Earlier dukedoms of Cumberland are extinct.
- Duke of Exeter - I think this one's extinct
- Duke of Hereford - merged in the crown in 1399
- Duke of Ireland - forfeit
- Duke of Kingston-upon-Hull - extinct
- Duke of Lancaster - merged in the crown in 1399, and again in 1413
- Duke of Leeds - extinct
- Duke of Montagu - extinct
- Duke of Newcastle - extinct
- Duke of Portland - extinct
- Duke of Ross - extinct, I think
- Duke of Schomberg - extinct
- Duke of Surrey - forfeit
- Duke of Sussex - extinct
- Duke of Teck - This is not a British peerage title at all. It is a title in the nobility of Württemberg
- Duke of Windsor - extinct
I'm not sure there are any dormant dukedoms. john k 13:58, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
