Seems a bit odd to have a split between foreign and domestic banks - can't find any other country where this is the case. Surely this would just complicate anyone's attempts to understand the sector in Canada?Ian3055 00:36, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The main reason is there is a distinction between a Canadian bank and a subsidiary of a foreign bank. "AMEX Bank Canada" is not my concept of a "Bank of Canada", it's purely a commercial venture with no retail operations, it's not Canadian in any real sense. It only makes sense to separate them out. IMO, There really is no problem understanding the sector if you read at least the article on the Big Five banks. --AlexWCovington (talk) 01:48, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Surely an institution which takes deposits and makes loans in Canada is a "Bank of Canada", I wouldnt say that who owns the operation is really of any relevance to that - this would be consistent with all the other "Banks of.." categories, which IMO is important to the overall useablity the articles. The business of where a company has its shares listed is surely for "Companies traded on the....Stock Exchange"? Although I agree with the arguement that only local subsidiaries rather than overseas branches be included. The real question is (although this is unlikely for the moment) what would we do if one of the "big five" were taken over by a foreign bank? Where do they go then?
