Rename?
[edit]The article Baltic Finns has been renamed to Finnic peoples per Talk:Baltic_Finns#Requested_move_6_February_2018. Should this category also be renamed accordingly? — Sebastian 17:54, 7 February 2018 (UTC)
- Seems logical, I support. --Minnekon (talk) 18:23, 7 February 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, I agree SørenKierkegaard (talk) 18:35, 7 February 2018 (UTC)
Wait - this isn't as easy as we thought. category:Finnic peoples already exists as a parent category of this one. What's worse, we have the reverse relationship with commons:Category:Finnic peoples and commons:Category:Baltic Finns. How to go about this? Should each of those pairs be merged? — Sebastian 08:11, 8 February 2018 (UTC)
- Content of category:Finnic peoples is incorrect (except subcategory Category:Finnic diaspora) and actually corresponds to Category:Finno-Ugric peoples. So content of first should be merged into latter. Commons categories are parallel and content should be merged. --Minnekon (talk) 10:50, 9 February 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, I agree with Minnekon. The category contents themselves were wrong. Really it's a simple topic, and the list for what ethnicities belong under which category can be read in the academic listings. Encyclopaedica Britannica or this page are both fine to see what's going on. The categorization in wikipedia has been slightly incorrect. You can also see the difference between Finnic and Finno-Permic here. To play the devil's advocate: If in theory the concepts of Finnic peoples and Baltic Finns differ in that they are not the same concepts, but rather that Baltic Finns are a subgroup of Finnic peoples, then 1) we should see academic evidence for this (which I have not found. Every single piece so far has said that Finnic peoples are the Finnic-language speakers in the northeastern part of Europe.); 2) the old redirect rules were still wrong, because "finnic peoples" redirected to "baltic finns".
