Category talk:Afro-Cuban jazz musicians
Untitled
[edit]It isn't clear if this cat is for people who are Afro-Cuban, or musicians of any ethnic origin who play "Afro-Cuban jazz." Badagnani 18:29, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
- It should be clear, as Afro-Cuban jazz is a musicial genre, not a nationality. For nationality, just place them in their correct country by musicians. (Mind meal 18:32, 28 June 2007 (UTC))
- I have added some things on the category page that will hopefully help clear this up, as I have the same problem you point out with Category:Brazilian jazz musicians, which is a genre (Brazilian jazz) and also a nationality. (Mind meal 18:36, 28 June 2007 (UTC))
It isn't clear, and wouldn't be clear unless a blurb to this effect were added at the top of the cat page. "Afro-Cuban jazz musicians" is a subcat of "Latin jazz musicians" which also includes "Brazilian jazz musicians" and other such cats, which would not seem to imply musicians who are not from Brazil. A blurb at the top of each cat page should make it perfectly clear what the scope of each cat is. Badagnani 18:40, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
- I created every single one of those original categories and subcategories, and Afro-Cuban jazz is a sub-genre of Latin jazz (also a genre, and not a national identifier, as is Brazilian jazz, so both are categorized correctly. Category:Brazilian jazz musicians poses a problem I have addressed Here, as a proposal for a change is under discussion. Looks like I'll lose because it goes against "precedent". Anyway, I think we are out to achieve the same thing, but these categories are all new and it will take some time to address each page as you have said. It will happen in due time, no worries. (Mind meal 18:45, 28 June 2007 (UTC))
Then a small blurb of one sentence needs to be placed on all the cat pages so that there's absolutely perfect clarity. Badagnani 18:48, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
Well go ahead; right now that can't be done for Category:Brazilian jazz musicians, because there is an ongoing discussion about what the category is for. The link I provided you above. I don't want to have a problem here with you. There is such a sentence on this category now, and can be placed on many categories that pose this same problem. Perhaps that is something you are interested in doing at the moment. Right now, I am trying my very best to categorize Category:Jazz musicians by genre. Before I made that category and their subcategories, there wasn't even a place for these people outside of Category:Jazz musicians. (Mind meal 18:52, 28 June 2007 (UTC))
- One more thing, to demonstrate a category I have worked on in full. See Category:Bebop musicians. That category is for a genre, just as Category:Afro-Cuban jazz musicians is for a genre. We already have categories by nationality where these people can be placed properly. Where confusion may arise, I am all for clearing up the confusion by informing people what a category is intended to do. To that end, your imput thus far was very useful in helping improve this very category. I would rather work with you, not against you. (Mind meal 19:02, 28 June 2007 (UTC))
