Where does Gassire's Lute go? There is no country called Soninke, there is no country anymore called Wagadu, if that ever was what we now call "country"--and which of today's countries, created by a few hundred years of Western colonialism, is appropriate for this poem? Note that Category:African poetry by language didn't even exist--for a continent with thousands of years of poetic tradition and hundreds if not thousands of languages.
