hi. Mfb. thanks for your great question. to answer your valid question, the reason that I added Category:2018 by country is because it contains 161 pages such as this one: 2018 in Spain.
In other words, there are numerous individual articles which are specifically designed as timelines for their respective countries, precisely for the year in question. so that is why that cat was added to this one. as far as the subcats listed there for each country, I understand, but the cat's main role is a gathering place for timelines by country that are indeed specific to this year, as noted above. thanks very much!! --Sm8900 (talk) 19:22, 13 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
2018 by country is already in the category 2018 where it belongs. Where is the point of another category that collects the same categories? Most subcategories of Category:2018 have a timeline, you would basically copy that category. --mfb (talk) 21:06, 13 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
thanks. I appreciate your comment. after researching this, I have found there is no other category that compiles the following individual timeline articles for the same year into one category, as their own separate type of article. for example, Category: 2018-related lists also contains List of sovereign states in 2018, which is clearly not a timeline article.
and to answer your question, if many subcategories have a timeline for 2018 within them--i.e. if there are multiple timeline articles for 2018, each within a different subcategory--then that is more reason, not less, to group all such individual timeline entries, into one category where they can be found easily as one group.
Then you should put the timeline articles, and only these, in the category. I don't see the purpose of this category, however. --mfb (talk) 01:17, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
