On 18 February 2014 an editor changed the scope of this category and proceeded to remove several entries. This is not the first time this has happened, and this editor is oblivious to the potential damage he/she is creating by changing the defintion of an existing category. I hope we can have a discussion here about this which will also have participation from others. Please notify me when you respond. Thanks in advance, XOttawahitech (talk) 08:29, 19 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, can you please explain why you think this is damaging? We a whole tree of Category:Scientists by century, and we don't have a "19th-century and earlier scientists" category. As such, I think the change in scope was reasonable, and your accusations of damage are not well founded. I've fixed the parenting, so this is now a subcat of Category:19th-century women - as such it should not contain women who were not active in the 19th century. We classified novelists in the same way - if someone had not published a novel in the 19th century, we did not classify them as a 19th-century novelist, so the same should apply to scientists - if they were not actively publishing in the 19th-century, they should not be in the category. I removed several people who died in the 18th century, so there shouldn't be debate over those either.--Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 14:55, 19 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
