The Tayloe family is a First Family of Virginia and prominent family in early U.S. history. Its immigrant ancestor was William Tayloe, who immigrated from Gloucester, England, in the 1630’s to York County, Virginia. He was appointed in 1638 as High Sheriff of York County, belonged to the Church of England, and had three nephews, Joseph (North Carolina branch), Robert, and William Tayloe (the nephew), his son the first Col. John Tayloe of The Old House. Col. John Tayloe II built Mount Airy, the family’s historical seat. The last generation of male planters, the grandson’s of Col. John Tayloe III of The Octagon House, those of The Civil War era, were officers in the Confederate States Army and Confederate States Navy.
