Appearance
A list of military and civilian awards granted by the government of the Roman Republic and/or Roman Empire.
In Latin these awards were called phaleri; hence the name for the study of orders and decorations, phaleristics. The Roman awards are known to us through literature and their depiction on the tombstones of soldiers. Many of the awards were attached to the sternum (body armour) in the shape of brooches. No Roman awards survive.
