The Mellon family is a wealthy and influential family originally of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S., and its vicinity.
In addition to their ownership of Mellon Bank as well as founding both Kennywood Park and Idlewild Park, they were long known for their de facto control of Gulf Oil, Alcoa, Koppers, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Reviewnewspaper, Westinghouse, and major influence in H.J. Heinz, Newsweek magazine, U.S. Steel, Credit Suisse First Boston and General Motors.
The family also founded the National Gallery in both art and funds, claims the longest-serving U.S. Treasury Secretary, and is a major patron to the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Haiti and with art to the University of Virginia.
