Judicial torture in pre-Union Scotland was in some circumstances permitted by the Privy Council of Scotland. Records often specify the use of the boot (torture). In several recorded cases, the threat of torture obtained a confession. The concepts are discussed here by Dr Allan Kennedy of the University of Dundee
