Variant spellings of this surname include Earnly, Erneley, Ernley and Ernly, among many others. The surname is derived from the Sussex parish of Earnley. This surname survives as the second barrel of the surname of the family of Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax, of Charborough House, Charborough Park, Dorset.
